Cutting edge spider care with the vet

Our Critically Endangered Desertas wolf spiders have been getting extra special care this month, as Benjamin Kennedy of the Veterinary Invertebrate Society came to given them a good check over - under anaesthetic!

The Desertas wolf spider is a Critically Endangered (IUCN 3.1) species - and our sipder are part of a European Endangered species Programme (EEP). After some health problems we called in the experts, and Benjamin Kennedy of the Veterinary Invertebrate Society has been advising us on the best way to care for them. This has included giving oral fluids, and on Wednesday 17th October Benjamin joined us for the day to give the spiders a full health check under anaesthetic.

As far as we're aware this is the first time the species has been anaesthetised, so we're delighted to be at the cutting edge of invertebrate medicine.
